Definition of Section 342 BNS-
“Counterfeiting device or mark used for authenticating documents described in section 338, or possessing counterfeit marked material”–
Section 342 1 BNS –
Whoever counterfeits upon, or in the substance of, any material, any device or mark used for the purpose of authenticating any document described in section 338, intending that such device or mark shall be used for the purpose of giving the appearance of authenticity to any document then forged or thereafter to be forged on such material, or who, with such intent, has in his possession any material upon or in the substance of which any such device or mark has been counterfeited, shall be punished with imprisonment for life, or with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to seven years, and shall also be liable to fine.
Section 342 2 BNS –

Example : (Serious Offense):-
Imagine someone creates a fake government seal and uses it to make fake passports or land ownership papers. This is a very serious crime because it involves important documents. If caught, the person could face life in prison or up to 7 years in jail, plus a fine.
Counterfeiting marks for other documents or electronic records:-
If someone fakes a mark or device used for less important documents (not covered in section 338), or has materials with such fake marks, they can be punished with jail time up to 7 years, plus a fine.
Example : (Less Serious Offense):-
Now, imagine someone fakes a company’s logo or stamp to create fake certificates or contracts. While this is still illegal, it’s not as serious as faking government documents. If caught, the person could face up to 7 years in jail, plus a fine.
